Assessments Overview

Page history last edited by Telannia Norfar 1 yr ago

Assessing students is a huge process. Assessment is not about giving the students a letter grade. It is about the teacher and student understanding what they know about a particular standard. It should be a system where the student and teacher not only know what the student should know but also where the student is in obtaining that knowledge. Therefore, there must be a strategic process that includes the method of tracking, types of assessments, student performance to be assessed and formats to the types of assessments. To get a detail understanding to each element of the process, click on the links. Also check out learning levels to understand the levels of learning students will demonstrate through assessments.

Method of Tracking

For the 2008-09 school year, I will adapt grading system with a detailed scale that explains what the student actually is capable of doing rather than just a letter grade. This system is from Mazano's book Classroom Assessment and Grading that Work. Due to the fact the school system still uses a letter grading system, the number scale will be converted to a letter grade. A grading system by the Pinnacle Plus system will be the primary source of grading. Grades will be transfered to Smartweb so that the approprate grade will be reflected.

Types of Assessments

Assessments will range from homework to projects. The types of assessments are from an assortment of resources including Brahier, Marzano and associates and emerging technologies (such as blogs). The variety of the assessments is to get as accurate of a picture of the students understanding of a particular concept.

Assessed Student Performance

The most obvious student performance to be assessed is the mathematical standards set by the state department of education. However, there are other skills the student needs to develop to be prepared for the 21st century. Therefore, 21st century skills will also be assessed. Check out performance categories for more details on all the items to be assessed.

Formats for Assessments

The format of assessments will change depending on the type of assessment. The details to the format of the assessment will help the student understand what is expected. For example, all tests will be divided into three sections. The first section will be force-choice type of items, the second section will be short response and the final will be short or extended response. Dividing in this way will allow for all levels of learning to be demonstrated. For more detail on how all the assessments will be formated, check out this link.
